Where are emPower! lenses made?
The semi-finished electronic lens blanks are manufactured by Panasonic in Japan.
Why should I become a certified emPower! dealership?
This is the first significant innovation in multi-focals in over 50 years. The introduction of the electronic add zone allows a significant reduction in the distortion and swim experienced by patients. To many, it feels as if they’re wearing single-vision lenses again. Additionally, the number of eyecare professionals who can sell and distribute emPower! in their practice will be limited, so it is a great marketing opportunity.
Will I be trained on, or able to repair emPower! Eyewear?
You will be trained to handle minor adjustment or repairs. However, due to the complex nature of the lens and frame technology, the emPower! laboratory will be able to handle all other repairs.
What is the lens thickness?
Minimum center thickness and edge thickness values will be comparable to those of other high-index products in the industry. The edge thickness will vary based on the Rx, but because it is made of 1.67 high-index material, the edge will be cosmetically appealing.
Can an Rx be changed, tuned or reprogrammed, or do patients need new frames for prescription changes?
emPower! lenses are surfaced by a laboratory no differently than today’s conventional high quality lenses. If the patient has a new Rx, a pair of eyewear will be manufactured to fit the new Rx. Depending on the condition of the frame, a new frame may not be required. There is one exception to the standard process: the frame will need to be returned to the lab for insertion.
In what lens material is emPower! available?
emPower! is currently available in 1.67 high-index plastic and has an ABBE value of 32. We anticipate a family of materials in the future.
What type of AR is being used?
A high quality AR will be used on all emPower! Eyewear. The exact brand will depend on the certified laboratory processing the emPower! job.
Is the electronic add consistently 0.75 diopters for all Rx's?
Yes, the electronic add is 0.75 diopters with an add range from 1.25 to 2.25.
What is the initial power range for emPower!—sphere, cylinder and add?
The power range at launch will be -7.00 D through +4.50 D, with an add power from +1.25 D to +2.75 D and a cylinder up to - 4.0 D. Please keep in mind that certain frame styles, shapes and fitting combinations may limit the overall availability of prescription range. The range will continue to expand as we go forward.
Why are the launches done in phases? Why not launch everywhere at the same time?
Targeted launch areas are part of a strategic business decision to ensure that the rollout is seamless and without supply or service issues. Training at the eyecare professional and laboratory levels takes time and dedicated resources. We want to ensure that all eyecare professionals receive the attention they need to create a successful dispensing environment.
Will there be marketing materials for accounts that want to do an in-office launch or an after-hours reception and emPower! presentation?
Yes, in-office marketing materials will be available for the certified emPower! practices at launch.
Can point-of-purchase marketing materials be made available to practices to generate interest and possible pre-sells prior to product release?
Yes, offices will have some initial materials before launch once they have signed a dealership agreement.
Is emPower! patent protected?
Yes. Presently there are 41 issued U.S. patents and over 250 patent applications and patents issued worldwide.
Can I use my present lens laboratory?
There is a specific laboratory network that is certified to process emPower! If your lab is one of the certified laboratories, you can order emPower! from that lab. If not, a certified lab must be selected for emPower! orders. To find a certified laboratory, please click on the “Find a Lab” link at the top of the page.
When adjusting the frame, should I take any precautions?
Only use fiber/nylon-covered pliers when necessary. Only use a hot air frame warmer when applying heat, while covering the temples and modules with your hand. Do not bend temples/modules at all.
Why can’t I get the lenses uncut?
emPower! is an electronic frame/lens package that must be edged and mounted to ensure the electronics are fully functioning. Certified laboratories have been fully trained on how to assemble all electronic components of emPower!
Can I heat the bridge of the acetate frames just a little?
No. Never heat a plastic frame at the bridge.
My lensometer does not read the add power as prescribed. What do I do?
Make sure you are reading emPower! while it’s in the Off mode. The reading should be .75 D less than your add. Once the glasses are activated, it will read your full add power.
How does the index of the lens change in the add zone? Does the lens change shape?
The lens does not change shape. When electricity is applied to the segment containing the liquid crystals, they change direction and in effect change the index of refraction.
Can I tint emPower! lenses?
Tinting is not available for emPower! at this time.
How can I adjust the temples of emPower! to fit different ear heights?
Hold the temple behind the module and warm with a hot air frame warmer. Completely cover the module with your hand. Gently bend as customary.
